Gear Cutting on the Taig Lathe I have an indexer I made when I used to have some Sherline equipment and have been trying to figure a way to use it on the Taig lathe, but it needed a little modification. I used to use it on a mill, and it was fine for that purpose, but on the lathe with a milling attachment it was a bit too big.

Also standard are oil reservoirs on the X/Y/Z axis to keep essential parts lubricated, and a brass cover to keep the y-axis leadscrew unscathed.

Nov 12, 2017· The Sherline thread cutting attachment looks sort of cheesy but it will cut more threads, both Imperial and Metric, than most full sized lathes with a full set of change gears and like just about everything else with a Sherline, it will cut those threads with precision.

Sep 08, 2007· The Sherline vertical mill is great for this because its lightweight construction actually is an advantage for "feel". I have no experience with Taig so I cannot comment. Jerry Keiffler showed me how to make any clock wheel cutter in 4 cuts in 15 minutes using the Sherline mill and I went out an bought one the next week.

Oct 18, 2015· My friend had a sherline. He used it mostly with aluminum and delrin. I. Ever saw him work a piece of steel with it other than drilling. Cute little bugger. Not to make the HF jealous, it is cute as well. If you are looking to mill steel, and expect good, repeatable results, the minimum is a big benchtop mill.
Re: Sherline or Taig mill? Like Henry has said, you can do it on the Sherline or Taig, with the CNC it may not be too great, but manually operated it may turn out better because you'll be able to compensate for any run-out yourself if you've got 20 years experience.

You don't really need a lathe to make gears. You can use a milling machine with a dividing head or rotary indexer. You didn't mention the materials you want to work with. I owned a Sherline mill, and although it's decent for milling really small parts in aluminum, you don't want to be doing much with steel. They aren't very rigid.

I wanted to try my hand at cutting some spur gears with my new Taig CNC mill. I made a mount for the Sherline CNC rotary table per the plan on Nick Carter's site and all looked good until I thought about how to mount the cutting tool. The Taig has an ER-16 spindle, so the largest collet it will hold is 10MM.

Most all my machining projects have been geared to small machines. Currently, I have Taig lathe and milling machines, but have had Sherline (and others) in the past. Both good machines for their intended purposes. I like the Taig machines.
