The commercially viable potash mines presently operating in Canada are located in southern Saskatchewan, and associated with deposits of the Prairie Evaporite Formation Fig. 1, Fig. 2.The Nutrien Ltd. mining operation in New Brunswick was recently closed because of lower cost of production from Saskatchewan mines.

Jansen Potash Project. BHP holds exploration permits and mining leases covering approximately 9,600 square kilometres in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The Jansen Potash Project is located approximately 140 kilometres east of Saskatoon. We currently own 100 per cent of this Project.

This bar chart shows Canada’s annual mine production of potash from 2009 to 2018. Production was 7.2 million tonnes in 2009. It increased to 15.6 million tonnes in 2010 and 17.7 million tonnes in 2011. Production decreased to 15.1 million tonnes in 2012 before steadily increasing towards a value of 18.8 million tonnes in 2015.

In contrast, some potash mines further east in Saskatchewan mine in a different potash layer, the Esterhazy Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation. At Cory, mine elevations range from approximately 980 m to 1045 m, averaging approximately 1010 m. These depths to A Zone potash mineralization are anticipated over most of the Cory lease area.
