The transboundary industry undertakes mining in vast habitats including water bodies such as rivers, lakes and coastal areas as well as on land by digging sand pits. The high-value and largely unregulated industry is estimated to account for 85% of all mineral exploration in the world.

The study revealed that the ecology of the mined rivers was seriously affected by sand mining, which interfered with migratory routes of fishes and resulted in loss of their spawning grounds. The unregulated sand mining also conflicted with the interests of the fisheries management and environment.
